A "Broken Finger" is a fracture of one of the bones in your
fingers. There are 3 bones called phalanges in each finger
and they are the more often injured, fractured or broken
than any of the other bones in the hand.
Most broken fingers and thumbs are caused by
and injury at work or while playing sports
like basketball, football, boxing, and rugby.
Work place injuries are usually of the crushed type from
dropping something on it or by getting it caught it moving
machinery parts. You can break your finger from slamming it
in a door too. Some broken fingers and thumbs are a result of repetitive
strain actions that can cause stress fractures.
Finger and thumb bone fractures that are easy to identify
will show visible signs of swelling, redness and look "out
of place", crooked, "kinked" or deformed. The area around
the broken bone will usually show discoloration and
bruising. Any amount of pressure will be very painful and
you will not be able to use your hand for much of anything.
Even brushing your teeth may become an impossible task.
Less obvious bone breaks are small stress
fractures that may not show any of the visible signs - only
ache or be somewhat sore to use. An x-ray may be
the only way to confirm a fractures.
