A Bunion is a boney enlargement around the base of the big
toe joint. Hallux valgus, another name for a Bunion,
will deform the big toe, causing it to turn inwards towards
the other toes.
In the earlier stages of the enlargement, the bursal sac
surrounding the joint, may be swollen and tender. In the
later stages, the lump will start to ossify (harden), meaning
that the body has deposited more bone to help protect the
joint. This in turn causes an increase in size of the
boney lump.
Bunions are most often a result of other structural
deformities of the tendon and ligaments in the foot and up
the leg. Genetics are thought to play a role in the
condition, but it can develop from other injuries to the leg
and/or foot.
